Red Bull Thre3style World Finals 2011 – The Full Photo Story

Wow. What a week. Hands down, one of the greatest work weeks of my life. The Red Bull Thre3style World Finals were being held in Vancouver, Canada and luckily for me I was hired to shoot the job along side the super talented David Lang and Kris Krug! If by some chance you haven’t heard of Red Bull The3style yet, I’ll try my best to break it down for you. Basically it is a global DJ competition to find out who is the best party rocker in the world. Who can get people on any given dance floor, to go the most crazy. And that my friends is no mean feat. To determine who is the best in business, DJ’s have to compete locally, nationally and then finally internationally to be eventually crowned king.

Over the course of the World Finals Week, DJ’s representing their respective countries competed each night so the judges could decide who was good enough to go on to the Grand Final. Throughout the days Red Bull had lined up an epic assortment of activities to keep everyone entertained and provide an outlet from the stress of the competition. I got to follow the international crew of incredibly talented DJ’s around Vancouver and documented for what many of them was the biggest week of their lives.

The Grand Final was to be held at the famous Commodore Ballroom, it was decked out to the nines and was clearly ready to rock Van City. As was the goal from the beginning of the competition, there could only be one winner. And in the end it was local boy DJ Hedspin from Canada who stood above the rest to claim the top prize in 2011. Bigups to all the DJ’s involved, I had a rad time getting to know you over the course of that insane week! You all, truly, do, rock! I just hope you have as much fun enjoying the pictures as I had taking them :) To all the Red Bull crew, you guys are unreal! I had the best time working with ya’s, we should really do it again sometime! PEACE

Red Bull Mini Drome!

In the great month of October I was lucky enough to be called down to Vancouver to photograph the Red Bull Mini Drome. A crazy event where the best bikers from all forms of cycling gather to jump on a single speed bike and ride around a miniaturised velodrome. What ensues is utter madness in order to be standing atop the podium at the end of the night. Was a fairly awesome day in the end, It’s pretty hard not to have a good time when I often had the best seat in the house! Big congrats to Addison Zawada for winning in Vancouver to take out his third title in the event! Wowa

On the road to Pula, Croatia

So last year I was photographing a wedding in Siena, Italy with my good buddy Jeremy Beasley. Afterwards I wound up with a bit of extra time on my hands and decided to pop over to Croatia and visit the little coastal town of Pula. I have always wanted to go to Croatia and last time I tried to go I was struck down with a stomach bug in Budapest and couldn’t leave the hostel for a week. I survived by eating apples cut up for me by the staff while I dreamed of places like Dubrovnik and Split. Finally a few years later I had the chance to experience the unique colour and culture of Croatia, here are some of the images I took :)

Comparing yourself to other artists can be a curse, the best thing you can do is remind yourself of your own work, and know that we all take different directions. The not so big move to Whistler

Over the last year and a half I have made Vancouver my home, but all good things must come to an end, but not a complete end. I have just moved 2 hours up the road to Whistler for the winter season so I can brush up on my snowboarding skills and work myself into the snowboarding photography world. I have always been passionate about skateboarding and snowboarding. Unfortunately where I come from in Aus, snow isn’t all that abundant, and concrete skate parks were, so that is the direction I went in. Now that I live in the great white north I have the opportunity to experience a proper Canadian winter, snowboard everyday, and with the Attack of La Niña on the way, it should be a good one. I will still be photographing jobs both here and in Vancouver so many trips down the magnificent Sea to Sky highway will be made. Be sure to drop me a line if your in town! Cheers, Dale

One week to go: New York City!

Being a photographer is rather interesting, sometimes you get to fly to other parts of the world and do awesome things. Take for instance a 5 day trip to New York that I will be going on in one weeks time. I am there to shoot a project involving two friends, Jeff and Pete. The plan involves: No normal clothes, only costumes, 24 hours a day, for 5 days. This being my first trip to New York, I dare say it will be a bit different from a typical touristy visit. And I gotta say, I’m a little nervous… but one thing is for sure, the resulting images will be… different.

Seattle City – Mariners Style

Last month myself and 2 buddies Erik and Phil from Vancouver travelled across the border to visit Seattle on a 24 drinking tour with a major league baseball game thrown into the mix. Alas the Mariners won, and we crawled back to Vancouver brutally hungover… what a great time! What a kick ass city!

The Land of Colour – Burano

Burano is a small Island in the Venetian Lagoon which is well known for it’s lace work. It also just so happens to have on it the most incredibly coloured houses you are ever likely to see. The amazing thing is it’s not just the houses, the small details such as house hold items are also painted bright blues, greens, oranges, yellows, pinks and purples. Anything that pops. Even the people wear bright colours. I found this mentality to be fascinating and found a real appreciation for what these people have created.
